Tenet Healthcare: Buying its way out of trouble

1994-1997:
Paid close to $1 billion for patient lawsuits, damages, civil penalties, and criminal fines while operating as National Medical Enterprises (N.M.E.).1 Included a guilty plea on 7 federal felonies and a $379 million fine paid to the federal government2. Entered into a 5 year corporate integrity agreement with the federal government.  Allegations related to patient abuse and widespread Medicare billing fraud. (Changed named from N.M.E to Tenet Healthcare in 1995) 

Jun 2002:
Paid government $17 million to settle allegations of overcharges to federal healthcare programs

June 2002:
Paid government $9.75 million to settle allegations of Medicare overcharges.

July 2002: 
Paid government $29 million to settle Medicare false claims allegations
5.

Feb. 2003:  
Paid government $4.3 million to settle Medicare fraudulent claims allegations
6.

August 2003: 
Paid government $54 million to settle allegations of unnecessary cardiac procedures at its hospital in Redding, California
7.

March 2004:
Paid government $22.5 million to settle Medicare improper billing allegations and Tenet hospital entered into a new corporate integrity agreement
8.

March 2004: 
Paid government $8.25 million to settle allegations of over-billing Medicare for patients transferred to other hospitals
9.

Dec. 2004: 
Paid patients $395 million to settle Redding Hospital lawsuits
10.

Dec. 2004: 
Paid patients $31 million to settle Palm Beach Gardens (Florida) hospital lawsuits alleging patient suffering and deaths as a result of post surgical infections following heart surgeries
11.

Nov. 2005:
Paid government $6.5 million to settle criminal investigation of Redding Medical Center allegations
12.

Jan. 2006:
Announced $215 million settlement of shareholder lawsuits

Approximate Total: $1.8 Billion. How much more will Tenet have to pay?
