Dr. Pearce practiced medicine in Miami from1956 to 1966. In 1966, he also completed board certification courses in neurology and psychiatry at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. Dr. Pearce has been a Fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine for close to forty years, a Life Member of the Dade County Bar Association, and a member of the Florida Bar and the American Bar Association. He is a Life Member of the Dade County Medical Association, as well as the Florida Medical Association and the American Medical Association.  He received an honorary Doctor of Humanities from the Pan American Medical Association in November 1976; a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Miami in 1974; and a Certificate of Appreciation from Metropolitan Dade County, Florida, in 1978.  From 1983 to 1989, Dr. Pearce served as a trustee of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation. In 1987, he was appointed a member of the Advisory Board of Canaan Venture Limited Partnership, a venture capital fund located in Rowayton, Connecticut.  Dr. Pearce also served on the Board of Directors of American Medical International, Beverly Hills, California, from 1988 to 1989.  In March 1989, he was elected a Director, and in May 1989 he was elected Chairman of the Board of Amerifirst Bank, Miami, serving in the latter capacity until August 1990.  In December 1989, he was elected to the Board of Directors of  IVAX Corporation, Miami, and served until February 1997.  In March 1990, Dr. Pearce became a member of the George E. Merrick Society of the University of Miami.  In early 1993 Dr. Pearce was elected to the Board of Trustees of the University of Miami, where he continues to serve.  He was elected to the Board of Directors of OrNda Healthcorp, Nashville, Tennessee, in March 1993, and served until Tenet Healthcare acquired the company in January 1997.  In early 1994 Dr. Pearce was elected to the Board of Fellows of the Harvard Medical School where he currently serves.  Since1986 he also has served as pro-bono consultant to Mayo Medical Foundation and to Mayo Medical Ventures in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Pearce is the founder of The Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation, Inc. Through this entity he has endowed a chair in Middle East Peace Studies at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Miami, Coral Gables.  The Foundation also supports the American Friends of the Salzburg Festival, of which Dr. Pearce is a Director. Among other institutions receiving contributions from the Foundation are the Russian National Orchestra, La Scala Opera in Milan, The Netherlands Bach Society, The Colburn School of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, the Mariinsky Theater, Kirov Ballet, Orchestra and Opera in St. Petersburg, Russia, The Wagner Society, and other worthwhile organizations supporting classical music, romantic music and grand opera. Every year, the Foundation gives generous contributions to approximately fifty worthwhile non-profit organizations.

The Foundation is a significant supporter of the University Of Miami School Of Music, especially the summer program in Salzburg, where scholarship aid is annually provided to about fifty students.  It also is a strong supporter of the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School, Boston. The Foundation also is a sponsor of the Council for Artistic Excellence and a member of the Golden Horseshoe Society of The Metropolitan Opera, New York City. Dr. Pearce is an Advisory Director of the Metropolitan Opera.  The Foundation also supports the Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies, which is associated with the Fletcher School of Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston.

Another area of great interest to Dr. Pearce has been historic preservation. He was one of the two individuals to provide the seed money to save and restore the historic Bonnet House and grounds in Broward County, Florida. Dr. Pearce received an award for these efforts in March 1994. Dr. Pearce has been an active member and supporter of FAI—the National Trust for Italy—for close to fifteen years. He is a founding member of the Friends of FAI Balbianello Circle.  FAI, said to be the second-largest landholder in Italy (after the Catholic Church), specializes in the restoration and preservation of noteworthy historic Italian villas and other properties of historic significance. Dr. Pearce also is a supporter of the Smithsonian Institute, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Colonial Williamsburg, the USS Constitution Museum, the Clinton County Historical Society, the Milford Historical Society, and many other worthy organizations.
